David Jones – The Intersection of Traditional Investigations and Cybercrime Investigations

Presented at the SERENE-RISC Spring Workshop 2016

The intersection of traditional professional investigations and cybercrime investigations. Professional investigators are finding they have to know more about cybercrime investigations and cybercrime investigators are discovering that they have to know more about the law and professional investigations. This presentation will discuss local and multinational investigations, who should be doing them and what skills and licensing are required. Areas that will be covered include privacy, working with lawyers, working with the CEO and IT staff.
Covert Investigation skills are needed by cybercrime investigators. Companies are finding that police cannot offer them resources and are referring companies to private investigators more frequently. There will also be examples of the perils of not approaching cyber investigations with major case manager skills, a solid plan and direct communications with the companies’ lawyers.
